How it makes money

  • Sells airline seats on Alaska Airlines and, since September 2024, Hawaiian Airlines.
  • Earns a large and steady share of profit from its loyalty program and co-branded credit cards.
  • Carries cargo in the bellies of passenger planes.

What moves the stock

  • Travel demand, which collapses in recessions and pandemics.
  • Jet fuel prices.
  • Labor costs and how well the two airlines are combined.

The Hawaiʻi connection

Hawaiian Airlines began in 1929 as Inter-Island Airways and was the state's hometown carrier for nearly a century. Alaska Air Group bought it in a deal announced in December 2023 and closed in September 2024. Hawaiian keeps its brand, but the decisions are now made in Seattle.

Moments that moved it

  1. Mar 2020

Air travel nearly stopped. U.S. airlines survived with federal payroll support.

  2. Dec 2023

Alaska agreed to buy Hawaiian Airlines.

  3. Sep 2024

The acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines was completed after regulators allowed it to proceed.
