What WUE means for students leaving Hawaiʻi, and coming here
The Western Undergraduate Exchange lets students from western states pay 150% of in-state tuition instead of full out-of-state rates at participating schools. Hawaiʻi students can use it at hundreds of mainland campuses, and UH Mānoa, Hilo, West Oʻahu and Maui College accept it in return. Check each school: some limit WUE by major or GPA.
›How this is calculated
Yearly cost = tuition + living costs + about $1,300 for books and fees + about $1,200 in flights for anyone leaving home island. Living at home is set at $4,000 a year for food and transport; living on campus at UH at $15,000.
The amount borrowed is whatever grants and family savings do not cover, times four years. The loan uses a 10-year standard repayment at about 6.4%, close to recent federal undergraduate rates. Federal loans for dependent undergraduates are capped at $31,000 total, so larger gaps would need private loans, which usually cost more.
