Act 114 (2022) raises the minimum wage in steps. At 20 hours a week:

Then the register adds the general excise tax
Most states skip sales tax on groceries. Hawaiʻi taxes businesses on nearly everything they sell, food included, and most pass it on to you. On Oʻahu that shows up as about 4.712% at checkout.

›How this is calculated
Pay is wage × hours × weeks. Federal tax uses 2026 single-filer brackets after the $16,100 standard deduction. Hawaiʻi tax uses 2026 single-filer brackets after the $8,000 standard deduction and $1,144 exemption under Act 46. Both are approximations that skip credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, which can give low earners money back.
Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%) come out of every paycheck regardless of income.
The general excise tax is 4% state plus a 0.5% county surcharge. Businesses may pass it on at up to 4.712% because the tax applies to the tax they collect too.
